Desktop Repair

Desktop repair is significantly easier than laptop repair. Components are very modular within the case. They are easy to access and easy to replace if they can not be fixed.

If you are bringing a desktop to one of our locations, we only need the tower. We do not need any peripherals like the monitor, keyboard, or mouse.click here to submit a repair form

Laptop Repair

It may be an understatement to say that currently the laptop repair service available in Hungary is not the best. Very few brands have chosen to invest in building service centers here. Dell is one exception to this rule, but taking a laptop to a brand's service center might turn a 25 dollar laptop repair into a $250 repair! There are also no parts distributors for most laptop brands in Budapest or Hungary. This fact means that unless used parts can be located, parts have to be ordered from abroad which can mean slow service.

Generally, laptops present more of a challenge for repair, because access to the components is more difficult and components are many times located directly on the motheboard. Motherboard work requires very expensive precision equipment. Through our computer repair partners, ExpatTech has cut rate access to over $20,000 dollars of such equipment. If it's possible and worth it, we will get your laptop fixed!

Mac Repair

Although we do not repair Macs directly, we can help any resident or visitor by overseeing the repair of Mac products through the use of one of our certified associates. We will coordinate everything on your behalf and keep you thoroughly abreast of the details.

In Closing
We know from our own experience how important it is to have our laptop and desktop computers functioning at their peak. Originally at ExpatTech we focused on providing web design services, but when we needed to fix or upgrade our own computers we quickly realized that existing laptop and desktop computer repair options in Budapest were over-priced. But more importantly, we found it hard to identify service repair companies whose staff was client-centered, spoke English, and had the skills to fix both PCs and Macs.

For any general questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us!

Windows XP - Outlook Express - Request Read Receipt for an Individual Message

Request a read receipt for an important message sent in Outlook Express.

When sending an important message in Outlook Express in Windows XP, you can request a read receipt for said message. This way you can help ensure your e-mail reached its destination and was read, even if it has not been responded to yet.

Note that while read receipts may be a good idea for certain messages, receiving this notification is not guaranteed. Your recipient may use non-Microsoft software that does not support read receipts. Also, e-mail users with Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail can configure their software to never send receipts or ignore particular requests....

Windows XP - Outlook Express - Stop Playing a Sound When New E-Mail Arrives

Prevent Outlook Express from audibly notifying you when new messages arrive.

Outlook Express in Windows XP plays a sound whenever new e-mail arrives. This is useful if you are multitasking; instead of keeping track of the Outlook Express window, you can work on other software and know by a sound whenever you need to check your Inbox.

There are some circumstances, however, where you do not want to hear when new messages arrive. For example, you may be listening to music or playing a game and may find the sound distracting. Thus, it can be disabled:...

[MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox - Security and Privacy - Clear the Download Manager History or Disable It

For privacy reasons, clear the list of files you download in Mozilla Firefox, or prevent it from recording this list altogether.

As you download files in Mozilla Firefox, the Download Manager (accessible via "Tools" - "Downloads") records a list of these files. This way, you can easily find and open files recently downloaded from websites, especially useful if you download files to multiple folders and forget where you place them.

For privacy reasons, especially if you share your computer with others, you may want to clear this list. Or, you may not ever want to keep a record of these files in the browser. ...

Windows Vista - Explorer - Show File Extensions

Prevent Windows Vista from hiding file extensions in Explorer, a possible security risk.

Depending on your configuration, Windows Vista may hide the file extensions of known file types in Explorer views. The reason for this is to "clean up" the display of files, as often the file icon signifies the type of file anyway.

Unfortunately, this configuration is a potential security risk. For example, it is possible that a filename that looks like it ends with ".txt", or a filename with an icon that looks like a notepad icon, actually has a hidden OTHER extension. If you double-click what you think is a simple text file, you may actually run malware instead!...

Windows XP - Outlook Express - Stop Sending Messages Immediately

Prevent Outlook Express from automatically trying to send messages as soon as you compose them.

Depending on your configuration, when you compose e-mail in Outlook Express in Windows XP, the software will automatically attempt to connect to the Internet to send your e-mail.

If you have an always-on connection to the Internet, this immediacy may be useful so you don't accidentally forget to send the e-mail later. However, if you are using a dial-up connection or one where you must pay for bandwidth, you might rather have Outlook Express queue your outgoing e-mail into the "Outbox" and only send it when you click the "Send / Recv" button or when Outlook Express automatically performs a periodic send / receive action....

If you're a fan of the actors and actresses in the series such as Mary Steenburgen (Clara) and Tom Wilson (Biff), a calendar offers upcoming appearance dates. [MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox - Security and Privacy - Toggle Java Support

Disable Java support in Firefox if you are concerned about applet security.

Java Applets are used in many webpages to display charts and graphs, navigational elements, games, or other interactive features. While Java applets are supposedly safer than ActiveX Controls due to a "sandboxing" mechanism that keeps applets from running trusted code or damaging the system, it is possible that this sandbox may have exploitable holes. See Secunia's 7/9/08 Sun Java JDK/JRE Advisory for an example of this.

Because of possible security violations, you may choose to turn off Java support in Mozilla Firefox at the expense of accessing features on certain websites....

For example, you may wish to fit a few more characters in a particular line, squeezing / tightening the characters together. Or, conversely, you might want to loosen the spacing to make text easier to read, especially for those in the back of a conference room.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 - Stop Playing Sounds When E-Mail Arrives

Disable Outlook 2007's audio notification whenever new e-mail arrives in your Inbox.

By default, Microsoft Outlook 2007 plays a sound whenever new items, such as e-mail or meeting requests, arrive. If you run other software while keeping Outlook open, or are performing other non computer-related tasks, this notification can help alert you to new e-mail without having to always keep an eye on the Outlook window.

Depending on your needs, however, you may wish to disable this notification. For example, if you are recording a video or audio conference, you may not want this sound inserted into the recording....

Remove animations when navigating between screens in Windows Media Center 2005.

Electronic Mail - Turn Off HTML When Responding to Mailing Lists

Respond to mailing lists in plain-text to avoid angering members.

Have you considered joining a discussion-based e-mail list? There are many lists available for meeting people, sharing ideas, or general chitchat about particular subjects. While many lists are open to everyone, one rule you should follow is to always post in plain-text format.

Many e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook default to HTML mail, meaning that you can post in color, different fonts, bold text, etc. However, many mailing lists contain members that either don't have such functionality or choose not to use it. Posting mail your normal way might result in some angry messages, or worse yet, getting you banned from the list....

[MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox - Security and Privacy - Do Not Save Form Information

For privacy reasons, prevent Mozilla Firefox from remembering text entered into web page forms and search queries.

Depending on your Mozilla Firefox configuration, information you key in certain web page forms and the Search Bar may be stored. When you perform searches, Firefox can remind you of these previous searches and let you re-perform the same queries. Also, when you access webpage forms with similar form element names such as "First Name" or "City", Firefox can display the information you typed on the same or similar forms, possibly saving some typing.

While these features may be convenient, they may cause privacy concerns, especially if more than one person uses your computer. Thus, if you want to disable storing form and Search Bar information:...

Windows Vista - Explorer - Modify the SendTo Menu

Add the ability to right-click on a file and send it to a text editor, a word processor, or other application.

When you right-click on a file or folder, a "Send To" menu appears, allowing you to create a Desktop shortcut, compress files, send files as attachments, and more.

In previous versions of Microsoft Windows, it was easy to modify this list of items. Simply creating a shortcut in the user's "SendTo" folder, directly underneath the "Documents and Settings" folder, did the trick. Windows Vista, however, places this folder in a different location....

Electronic Mail - Joke Passing Etiquette

A few things to consider before passing jokes around via e-mail.

E-mail is a great way to keep in touch with friends, family members, and coworkers. Many people love to do so by forwarding jokes to dozens, if not hundreds, of their address book contacts.

Before you become the humor distributor, please, PLEASE read the below etiquette suggestions, lest your e-mails may just find their ways to peoples' virtual trash cans. Even worse, some people may stop reading your e-mails altogether if you don't follow these guidelines:...

[MODIFIED] Windows XP Misc - Do Not Automatically Restart After a System Error

Keep the Windows XP Blue Screen of Death visible for diagnostic purposes.

If Windows XP detects a critical error, a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) is displayed with some diagnostic information about the error. Then, Windows XP will attempt to send information to a log file and automatically reboot the computer.

If you would rather Windows XP not try to automatically restart so you can view the BSOD and jot down information for possible later debugging, perform the following tweak. Note that you should be logged in as an administrator first. Also, it is not recommended to perform this tweak on server machines as in many cases these should automatically restart, unless you are diagnosing a serious error....

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 - Prevent Searching for Help Content Online

[MODIFIED] Windows XP and Explorer - Display Folder Path in Explorer Title Bar

Make it easier to know what folder you are opening in Explorer. Add full paths to the title bars of Windows XP folders.

When you open a subfolder from Explorer in Windows XP, such as C:\Downloads\Graphics or C:\Multimedia Files\Graphics, only the name of the subfolder, i.e. "Graphics", appears in the folder's title bar. If you have multiple folders on your computer with the same name, it may prove confusing to determine the full path of a particular opened folder. For example, if the Taskbar contains two buttons representing a folder "Graphics", which button relates to which folder?

You can configure Explorer to show the full path in the folder's title bar. This way you can quickly glance at the window, or the folder's button on the Windows Taskbar, to see exactly which path is represented by a particular Explorer window....
